If you’ve played any roulette, you already know this one. The only new thing is the 00 box at the top of the table, next to 0.

Put chips on numbers, the lines between them, or the outside boxes. 00 is a number like any other, and you can bet on it straight up.

Every bet carries the same 5.26% edge, except one. The top line bet pays too little for the five numbers it covers, so it’s highlighted in red. The bars show how often each bet wins, compared with red or black.

Skip the top line bet
One chip covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. It wins five times in 38 but only pays 6 to 1, which makes it the worst bet on the table.
Cover those numbers with other bets instead and the edge goes back to 5.26%.
Look for surrender
A few tables give you half your stake back on red/black, odd/even and high/low when the ball lands on 0 or 00. That halves the edge on those bets.
Most online games don’t have it. If the help screen doesn’t mention surrender, assume it isn’t there.

What is American roulette?
It’s the double-zero version of roulette. The wheel has 38 pockets: 1 to 36 in red and black, plus a green 0 and a green 00.
What is the RTP of American roulette?
94.74% on standard bets, which is a 5.26% house edge. The one exception is the top line bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, which returns 92.11%.
Why is the house edge 5.26%?
The payouts are the same as European roulette, but there’s one extra pocket for the ball to land in. A single number still pays 35 to 1, yet it only comes in once every 38 spins on average.
Does 00 pay more than other numbers?
No. A straight-up bet on 00 pays 35 to 1, the same as 0 or any number from 1 to 36.
What is the worst bet in American roulette?
The top line, also called the basket or five-number bet. It covers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 but only pays 6 to 1, which puts the house edge at 7.89%.
Is American roulette better than European roulette?
Not on the maths. European roulette has one zero and a 2.70% edge. American has two and a 5.26% edge, so you lose roughly twice as fast on the same bets.
What is the surrender rule?
On tables that offer it, you get half your stake back on red/black, odd/even or high/low when the ball lands on 0 or 00. That cuts the edge on those bets to 2.63%. Most online American roulette games don’t have it, so check the help screen.
Where can I play American roulette for real money in the UK?

Can a betting system beat the double zero?
